Trust the Randomness
How does Mythic Bastionland solve the "so what" problem? In their first session my players encountered a landmark: a small monastery. Following elmcat's absolutely crucial Refereeing advice, I had already used the Spark tables to prep an NPC in that location as well as a quest for that NPC to provide should my players so choose. Indeed, they decided to help this abbot recover a missing shipment of beer, and followed the trail to a bridge where they fought off some wolves. Nowhere in the book was this spelled out, but with the power of Spark tables (and thumbing through the book until I found a suitable enemy statblock) I was able to create a session so convincing that one of my players remarked, "Wow, that was a perfect first encounter!" Let this be a lesson to all: trust the randomness.
This blog was written for the Prismatic Wasteland Blogwagon on randomness. I rolled a 17 (which was lucky because I did this on the 16th), a 4, and pulled the Ace of Spades.
